History in the Making – Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Second Location Celebrating First-Ever Match Day Celebration

WHO:                   Students, faculty and staff in NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine

WHAT:                 First-ever “Match Day” event for college’s secondary location

WHEN:                 11 a.m. Friday, March 17

WHERE:              NSU’s Tampa Bay Regional Campus, 3400 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Clearwater

– Event will be held in the Moss Cafeteria on the first floor of the facility –

WHY:                    For many years it has been a rite of passage for students getting ready to graduate from medical schools across the United States – Match Day.

This is when the National Resident Matching Program releases the results of all the applicants who applied for residency or fellowship training positions across the United States and students learn where they will enter the field of medicine. And for the first time, NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s second location in the Tampa Bay/Clearwater area will be participating!

“This is truly a historic day in the history of our college,” said Elaine Wallace, D.O., M.S., M.S., M.S., M.S., the dean of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Matching is a milestone in the career of physicians, and for our Tampa Bay Regional Campus to now be participating is something I am very proud of. It took a lot of work to get here, and I know this is just another step in our path to preeminence.”

Match Day is a milestone for any medical student, and NSU will host a ceremony where students will learn their destinies, surrounded by their loved ones, the faculty members who trained them, university and community leaders and other dignitaries. Part of the ceremony will be the students announcing the location on where they are heading on a map of the United States.

As we know, the nation is facing a critical shortage of doctors, something that is only anticipated to worsen over the coming years. One of NSU’s Core Values is Community, and for many of our graduating physicians, it is important to them to give back and work in the communities they are from – with many choosing to practice in Florida. In fact, when you look at the data, there are approximately 9,000 doctors who maintain a license to practice in Florida. If you peel that number back just a little more, you’ll see that 2,000 of those are graduates from NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (just over 20%.)

This is very cool photo/video and story opportunity – these students are our next generation of physicians, and they will be heading out across Florida, the nation and the world as they continue their personal and professional journey.
