NSU Received Cutting From Tree of Hippocrates to Grow at Tampa Bay Regional Campus

Event Also Included the Dedication of Moss Cafe at the Tampa Bay Regional Campus

Nova Southeastern University (NSU)
recently joined an exclusive club, welcoming a cutting from the descendant of the original plane tree or sycamore tree of Hippocrates, for its Tampa Bay Regional Campus.

“This is truly a high honor for our university, and we are thrilled to be sharing in such an important part of history,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “The fact NSU is going to now have a tie to the ‘father of medicine’ is both humbling and inspiring. Eventually NSU students will be able to sit in the shade of this tree like students of Hippocrates of Kos did 2,500 years ago.”

Cuttings from the tree have been outplanted at educational institutions and health care organizations across the globe, and now that list is growing by one – NSU.

Hippocrates was a Greek physician of the Age of Pericles and is considered the father of medicine. According to legend, Hippocrates taught his students under the branches of the original tree approximately 2,500 years ago. The existing Hippocrates Tree, estimated to be 500 years old, is located in Kos, Greece, near where the original tree once stood.

Along with the cutting of the tree, there was an unveiling of a bust of Hippocrates – a one-of-a-kind replica of the highest quality of the original excavated on the Greek island of KOS.

A number of dignitaries and members of the community attended the ceremony, including Tampa Bay residents and philanthropists Dr. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel will joined various elected officials, community members, NSU President and CEO Dr. George Hanbury and other NSU officials for the celebration.

Prior to the outplanting and unveiling ceremony, another ceremony took place inside the Tampa Bay Regional Campus: the dedication of the Moss Cafe. Moss Construction has long worked with NSU, helping construct many of the university’s campus facilities, including the Tampa Bay Regional Campus. As a way to honor this partnership, the university dedicated the cafe on site.
