NSU Graduating Doctors to Learn Where Their Next Stops Will Be

WHO: Students in Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) two medical schools: the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (MD) and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)

WHAT: Match Day – this is the first-ever for the Charter Class of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine and the first-ever combined match day for students in both Medical Colleges at NSU

WHERE: NSU’s Don Taft University Center, 3300 S. University Drive., (Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus)

WHEN: 11 a.m. Friday, March 18

For the event, NSU will be adhering to its COVID-19 protocols. With the easing of restrictions, face masks are optional for those attending the celebration. We also encourage all students, faculty and staff to be fully vaccinated – and if someone isn’t feeling well, they should stay home.

WHY:  For many years it has been a rite of passage for students getting ready to graduate from medical schools across the United States – Match Day. This is when the National Resident Matching Program releases the results of all the applicants who applied for residency or fellowship training positions across the United States and students learn where they will enter the field of medicine.

For many years, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) students in NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine participated in Match Day, along with their fellow graduates across the nation. What makes Match Day 2022 even more special is that it’s the FIRST-EVER for students in the MD charter class of the Dr. Karin C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, who will be graduating this spring.

“Four years ago, we welcomed the first-ever class to enroll in NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “So much has happened since then, including a global pandemic. Our students have come so far and learned so much, and now it’s time for them to take the next step in their careers and lives – I know they are destined to do great things.”

Match Day is a milestone for any medical student, and NSU will host a ceremony where students will learn their destinies, surrounded by their loved ones, the faculty members who trained them, university and community leaders and other dignitaries. Part of the ceremony will be the students announcing the location on where they are heading on a map of the United States.

Some of the dignitaries scheduled to attend include:

  • Broward County Mayor Michael Udine (speaking)
  • Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (video appearance)
  • State Rep. Robin Bartleman
  • State Rep. Felicia S. Robinson
  • Town of Davie Vice Mayor Michelle Whitman
  • Town of Davie Councilmember Caryl Hattan

There are 46 students who will be graduating from NSU’s Collage of Allopathic Medicine (MD) – and this charter class will soon join the 224 graduates from NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) to help alleviate the physician shortage crisis that is facing both Florida and the nation. NSU is one of only four colleges/universities in the nation to have both an M.D. and a D.O. medical school and is the first and ONLY university that grants these degrees jointly in Florida.

“The members of our Charter Class have helped shape the trajectory of this new and innovative medical school, and this Match Day is a time to celebrate their achievements,” said Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, the founding dean of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine. “I am very proud of our first-ever graduating class and am excited to see where our students are heading next.  You only get one chance to have a first-ever Match Day for graduating medical school students, and this is truly a feel-good story for the entire South Florida community.”
