Holocaust Reflection Contest Fuels Lessons for Future Generations

Nova Southeastern University has maintained a strong commitment to battling anti-Semitism and promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging on its campus.

In keeping with that mantra, NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library is home to the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center, a fully equipped museum/resource center open to both students as well as the general public at no charge during all library hours – seven days a week.

For almost a decade, the center has conducted an annual statewide Holocaust Reflection Contest in which middle and high school students submit essays, short-form film documentaries, or artistic drawings depicting their personal thoughts on the lessons they have learned through their own Holocaust education and how these lessons impact their thinking in making their daily life choices.

The 2023 year’s contest ran from January 11 to February 14, and the awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. The winning students’ works will be showcased during the event, and the students and their teachers will be on hand.  NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library on the university’s Davie Campus, Second Floor, Cotilla Gallery, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Boulevard.

The winners, as well as their teachers and schools, receive cash awards as well as a full weekend experience which includes tours of the center, one-on-one sessions with Holocaust survivors, and a celebratory dinner. The contest reaches out to more than 3,000 Florida schools – both public and private. There were almost 2,000 submissions this year.

The Reflection and Resource Center and the Holocaust Reflection Contest provide a topical, enlightening story opportunity on a special day that reflects on a dark past. It also offers a beacon of positivity on a college campus amid widespread anti-Semitic incidents at other campuses across the country.

The resource center’s permanent exhibit has 250 original artifacts, wall-mounted images depicting the events both leading up to and including the period of the Holocaust, original newspapers of the period, as well as research computers connected to most major world-renowned Holocaust museums. This center also houses the Shoah Foundation Database upon which visitors may conduct research and view some 55,000 Holocaust survivor testimonies and the Echoes and Reflections Timeline of the Holocaust.
