NSU’s Ambitious ‘Campaign to Preeminence’ Focuses on Making Ours a Healthier World

University Reaches $788 Million Mark Towards
$1 Billion by 2025

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Making ours a healthier world, whether through the economy, our children, future leaders, ecosystems or human health and well-being, is a cause we can all believe in. Today’s donors and philanthropists want to be involved with institutions, causes and partnerships that are improving lives, helping them manifest their personal passions and professional visions, and where their resources can make a meaningful and tangible difference.

These values and aspirations are at the heart of all that Nova Southeastern University (NSU) accomplishes and empowers others to do in education, research, health care and community service. It’s the driving force behind the university’s new philanthropic and research endeavor, NSU’s Campaign to Preeminence.

Dr. George Hanbury, NSU President and CEO

“We are marching forward in our rise as a preeminent, national research university, one of only two world-class private universities here in Florida,” said Dr. George Hanbury, NSU’s President and CEO. “What connects NSU with our donors, partners and researchers is the commitment to make a meaningful and positive impact on the world. Together, we can change lives today and enrich the future for those who come after us.”

In 2010, NSU’s Vision 2020 strategic business plan set an ambitious goal to raise $250 million through philanthropy and $300 million in research-related funding. NSU exceeded those goals by generating $318 million in gift commitments and $303 million in research grants and contracts by the end of 2020. NSU’s Vision 2025 strategic plan, with its newly announced Campaign to Preeminence, raises that goal to $500 million in both philanthropy and research, generating a combined $1 billion total by the end of 2025.

NSU has already received more than $788 million towards that $1 billion goal. Some recent and significant gifts of preeminence include:

  • $800,000 for facilities and scholarships at the Tampa Bay Regional Campus;
  • $400,000 for research at the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research Fund; and
  • $300,000 for additional research into Gulf War Illness.

“Preeminence sparks the best in us and pushes us to create something lasting,” says Martin Press, attorney, NSU Trustee and Chair of NSU’s Campaign to Preeminence Steering Committee. “NSU offers donors like me myriad ways to get involved and make a difference that matter most to us. My wife and I chose to make a named gift to the Martin and Gail Press Health Professions Library where we can support the development of tomorrow’s best medical and health care providers, and it is also emblematic of our special bond since we met at a library where we shared our love of books and learning. So, we will always think of libraries as a place where you can find something inspiring, life-changing and long-lasting.”

Health Care is One Area of Impact in NSU’s Campaign to Preeminence

NSU’s Campaign to Preeminence offers university supporters a variety of key impact areas of impact that weave throughout its colleges and schools, its research centers, libraries, museums, clinics and innovation center. These areas of impact include arts and culture, athletics, business and economy, diverse communities, health care, oceans and nature, pediatrics and child development, and, of course, the scholarships and support for NSU students and faculty.

In arts and culture, the NSU Art Museum is making Fort Lauderdale a fine arts hub for South Florida, while also bringing the gifts of creativity and imagination to underserved communities.

“Our goal is to help the NSU Art Museum open its doors wider and wider, so that all in the community can benefit from the treasures and inspiration inside,” said donors Gerard Taylor and Nancy Bryant. “Whenever we see crowds of school children touring the exhibits here, we know we are moving that dream another step forward. Funding programs like these – that’s what warms our hearts.”

Transformative and often life-saving changes are taking place at the intersection of business and health care.  As Julie Anne Jacko, Ph.D., a professor at both NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, and NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (M.D.), said: “Better use of big data can open the door to better patient care, introducing new ways to make health care more accessible to those who need it most and to address many of our most pressing needs for mental health and substance abuse treatments. We can use the power of technology to save lives.”

NSU Administers the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program and the Marine Environmental Education Center

In the area of preserving our oceans, NSU’s world-class research in marine science ranges from shark genomics and its possible impact on human health to sea turtle conservation to coral reef restoration and is making contributions to the marine environment while bolstering dozens of industries leading to healthier economies, ecosystems and communities.

The philanthropic gifts and research funding brought in through NSU’s Campaign to Preeminence allow the university to make even greater contributions by:

  • Elevating the physical and mental well-being of communities through new standards in health care education, research, and clinical practices.
  • Nurturing and protecting children through innovations in pediatric medicine, health care, child development, and education.
  • Sustaining the oceans, marine life, and the natural world, extending the spirit of sustainability to business and professional life as well.
  • Community is an NSU Core Value, and an Area of Impact in the Campaign to Preeminence

Investing in future leaders through student scholarships, professorships, and program support.

  • Bolstering businesses, professions, and economic vitality through investments in innovation, technology, and the talent needed for the future.
  • Cultivating the arts community, enriching cultural life and ensuring these gifts reach across and throughout diverse communities.
  • Fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the NSU and affiliated communities, here at home and around the world.
  • Championing the drive to excellence, leadership and teamwork—along with personal well-being— through collegiate athletics, recreational sports and fitness programs.

“A gift or grant to NSU changes things for the better,” President Hanbury said. “Yes, it benefits NSU students, professors, researchers, health care providers, but it also benefits the companies, patients, families and communities we serve, here and around the globe. That’s why a gift to NSU truly is a gift of preeminence.”
