FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – Chad A. Perlyn, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, senior vice president of surgical services, community health, and corporate responsibility at Nicklaus Children’s Health System, has been named executive vice president and chief medical officer at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and executive medical director for NSU Health, effective Dec. 1. Dr. Perlyn will also be a professor of health care sciences at NSU’s Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences.
In this new role of chief medical officer for NSU’s seven health care-related colleges and NSU Health, its patient-centric, integrated health care network of more than 70 practice areas, clinics, and centers, Dr. Perlyn will work on strategic development of NSU Health. He will be the senior leader of all medical and clinical aspects and functions of the university and its health care enterprise.
NSU’s health care colleges, providing bachelor’s, master’s, and professional degrees, as well as research and clinical activities, include two medical schools (M.D. and D.O.) and schools of dental medicine, health care sciences, nursing, optometry, and pharmacy. Dr. Perlyn will coordinate and collaborate with the various academic health care disciplines to advance NSU Health’s mission to integrate education, research, and patient care for better patient care as well as to foster research breakthroughs and enrich the health care workforce with qualified and caring leaders, providers, and professionals.
“This is a new and very important leadership role for the university and our array of health care clinics,” said Dr. Harry K. Moon, NSU’s president-elect and chief operating officer. “Dr. Perlyn has played a pivotal role at Nicklaus Children’s, both as a nationally recognized health care executive and as a pediatric plastic surgeon. Over his 15-year leadership tenure at Nicklaus Children’s, he has held many roles and shaped many key programs across the Nicklaus Children’s Health System, including serving as president of Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists, managing the development and operations of the Nicklaus Children’s ambulatory surgery center, and overseeing the opening of the Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower.

Under Dr. Perlyn’s leadership, Nicklaus Children’s Health System saw significant growth, including a 50 percent increase in the size of its physician group practice. The system now has 350 physicians and 185 advanced practice providers. Amid this rapid growth, he prioritized clinician development and integration, implementing initiatives such as a physician compensation plan, leadership programs, and cultural enhancement efforts. He also oversaw the modernization of operational functions through improved patient access, streamlined scheduling systems, and enhanced revenue cycle functions.

Dr. Perlyn will work with leaders from all health care disciplines in the university to evolve and grow the delivery of interconnected patient care, expand basic science and clinical research programs, and ensure patients and caregivers have a personalized and inviting experience at the forefront of academic medicine.

Dr. Perlyn is Board certified in plastic surgery and is an important contributor to the field through publications, national and international lectures, media commentary, and podcasts. He will maintain his practice as a pediatric plastic surgeon, caring for infants and children with congenital differences, remaining on staff as a plastic surgeon with Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists.
Dr. Perlyn joined Nicklaus Children’s Health System as a pediatric plastic surgeon in 2009. His leadership roles have included president of Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), medical director of Surgical Services at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, founding chairman of the Nicklaus Children’s Ambulatory Surgical Center, and founding chief of the NCPS Division of Plastic Surgery. He was also chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery and an associate professor at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and faculty of practice in the global health studies program at the University of Miami.
Dr. Perlyn oversaw surgical services, community health, corporate responsibility, and, as a senior vice president, was involved in all aspects of the Nicklaus Children’s Health System, including strategic planning, quality improvement, marketing, and philanthropic endeavors.
Dr. Perlyn’s leadership experience extends to global health, including his extensive work following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, which culminated in the founding of a plastic surgery fellowship program in Haiti. He is the fellowship director of the G4 Alliance and through this role works closely with talented young individuals across the globe on multilateral Issues related to surgical care in middle- and low-income countries. Other groups he works closely with include Partners in Health in Halti and Kausay Was Clinic in Peru through which he strives to make health care accessible, affordable, and adaptable for all.
Dr. Perlyn earned his M.D. at the University of Miami with surgical training at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He earned a doctorate in craniofacial molecular biology at the University of Oxford while on a prestigious fellowship from the American College of Surgeons. His molecular biology research of how gain-of-function FGFR mutations affect etiology of cleft and craniofacial difference has earned international recognition. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration with a specialization in health care from the University of Miami’s Herbert Business School and received his undergraduate degree in English literature from Northwestern University.
A Miami native, husband of Brooke Perlyn, and father of two teenaged boys, Dr. Perlyn has a passion for ocean activities, marathon running, photography, and travel.
