NSU Mathematician Awarded Higher Doctorate From University in Russia

Lee Became First International (non-Russian) Recipient of a D.Sc. in Mathematics From HSE

Edmond W. H. Lee, a professor of mathematics at NSU’s Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, was recently awarded a Doctor of Sciences (D.Sc.) degree from National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), Russia.

Lee became the first international (non-Russian) recipient of a D.Sc. in Mathematics from HSE.

The Russian D.Sc. is a higher doctorate that can be earned after the Ph.D., and is awarded for “significant contribution to science and/or technology based on a public defense of a thesis.” It is comparable to the German habilitation and the UK higher doctorates but has no academic equivalent in North America.

In Fall 2020, Lee successfully defended his D.Sc. thesis via Zoom in front of a dissertation committee of five experts from Brazil, Israel and Russia. Lee’s thesis is a collection of results from more than 50 peer reviewed articles he published in the past 15 years.

”The results of the thesis constitute a major contribution to the theory of semigroups and their varieties,” said professor Lev D. Beklemishev, chairperson of the dissertation committee. “They are on the level of the best results in this field and amply satisfy the requirements for the degree.”

Prior to the D.Sc. degree from HSE, Lee received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto, followed by master’s and doctoral degrees from Simon Fraser University, Canada. Lee joined NSU in 2011 and his primary research focus is on the theory of varieties of semigroups, a topic that belongs to the intersection of universal algebra and semigroup theory. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Algebra Universalis and Semigroup Forum, two eminent specialist journals of his research area. Lee is most known for his work on equational theories of small semigroups and has supervised Ph.D. students from China and Portugal.
