FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Florida’s largest private research university, has reached a level of standing few of the nearly 4,000 higher education institutions across the United States have achieved: designation as an R1 research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

NSU is one of only two private universities in the state of Florida with this designation and also is one of two universities in Florida to achieve this designation this year.

“Our designation as an R1 institution is testament to the passion and commitment of NSU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and inspiring donors who have paved the way for decades,” said NSU President and CEO Harry K. Moon, M.D.  “NSU will never be the same after today. It will stand among the very best research universities, with a host of benefits for NSU and our state, including the promise of exciting new innovations in health care, biotechnology, oceanography, and economic development supporting Florida’s blue economy.”

R1 is an elite designation given by Carnegie to universities with the highest levels of research activity, including research funding exceeding $50 million and more than 70 doctoral degrees awarded. This R1 classification marks NSU’s culmination of building a leading research university, and a rigorous two-year effort to recognize investment in our research enterprise.

“From our labs to patient care, research drives and differentiates our extensive work in health care,” said Dr. Chad A. Perlyn, NSU’s executive vice president & chief medical officer, and the university’s interim dean of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine and executive medical director for NSU Health. “In such areas as brain health, cancer, and mental health, the power of discovery is transforming lives and improving communities throughout Florida.”

NSU’s research efforts are led by Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D., senior vice president for research and associate provost.

“This extraordinary milestone was reached through the tireless efforts of our eminent faculty and talented students across colleges and disciplines who are advancing knowledge, driving innovation, and positively influencing society,” he said. “I am confident that our research enterprise will continue to thrive and flourish in the years to come.”

Universities that have attained the R1 designation have historically seen an increase in student applications, attracted more esteemed researchers and faculty, and boosted economic development in the communities where the institutions are located. NSU students and faculty conduct leading-edge research throughout their colleges, addressing global issues and shaping the future. With access to advanced and innovative technologies, they foster solutions in health care and biotechnology, as well as in environmental, life, and social sciences.
