FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE Fla. – Following the recommendation of the Shepard Broad College of Law, Nova Southeastern University has granted tenure to five members of the NSU Law faculty. The recipients of tenure are Professors Olympia Duhart, Kenneth Lewis, Jr., Kate Webber Nuñez, Michele Struffolino and Marilyn Uzdavines. The grant of tenure is an institutional recommendation of each faculty member’s demonstration of exceptional scholarship, teaching and service.
“NSU Law is deeply committed to student education and thoughtful research that has real-world impact,” said Jon M. Garon, dean of the College of Law. “These are faculty members who focus on their student’s learning and training. They are also nationally recognized scholars, and very active in the community. The tenure reflects importance of being committed to teaching, scholarship, and service.”
Olympia Duhart is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty & Student Development. In that capacity she also serves as Director of the Legal Research and Writing (LRW) Program. Professor Duhart teaches LRW I and II Constitutional Law I and II, and Women and The Law. She is an elected member of the Board of Governors for the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT). She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning, the LexisNexis Publications Advisory Board, and is a member of the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors. Duhart is a coach for the Moot Court Society. She was also appointed to serve on the Grievance Committee for the 17th Circuit “D” for the Florida Bar. Professor Duhart was the Co-President of the SALT from 2014 – 2016 with Professor Ruben Garcia of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She continues to serve SALT as an elected member of the Board of Governors.
Kenneth L. Lewis, Jr. was promoted to Professor of Law as part of his grant of tenure. He teaches LRW I and II, Property Law, Sports Law, Administrative Law, Employment Law, Lawyering Skills and Values, and Legal Reasoning and Research. Prior to joining the faculty, Professor Lewis worked as a litigator for Greenberg Traurig in Miami, Florida. Professor Lewis also managed his own law firm where he, litigated commercial disputes, represented community associations, and represented athletes and entertainers. Prior to becoming an attorney, Professor Lewis was the chief financial officer and chief operating officer for a multi-million dollar Florida company.
Kate Webber Nuñez is Professor of Law with an emphasis on labor and employment law. She teaches Employment Discrimination, Business Entities, Securities Regulation, Civil Procedure, Remedies, Workers’ Compensation, and LRW courses. She also teaches a number of courses in the NSU Law online Master of Science in Employment Law program. Professor Nuñez has served as faculty in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s deposition skills program since 2010. Professor Nuñez’s scholarship draws on political science theory to analyze federal employment discrimination law. Her works have appeared in the University of Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal, the “Title VII at 50” Symposium issue of St. John’s Law Review, and the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law. She has presented at both legal and political science conferences including presentations at the Midwest Political Science Association’s Annual Conference in both 2014 and 2015.
Michele N. Struffolino is a Professor of Law and the Associate Dean of Students. She teaches LRW I and II and Property Law, Professional Responsibility, Legal Reasoning and Research and the Independent Research Seminar for the NSU Law online Master of Science in Law programs. Prior to joining the faculty at NSU Law, Professor Struffolino taught Legal Research and Writing II (an appellate advocacy, research and writing course) to second year law students at New England School of Law. Professor Struffolino also lectured in the areas of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Constitutional Law for a Bar Exam Preparation Program offered at New England School of Law, Suffolk University Law School and Northeastern University School of Law.
Marilyn L. Uzdavines was promoted to Professor of Law as part of her grant of tenure. Professor Uzdavines teaches JD courses in Health Care Compliance, Health Care Organizations, Regulations, and Access, Real Estate Transactions, and other health-related courses. She also teaches Pharmaceutical Law, Legal Perspectives in Health Care Ethics, and Regulatory Compliance in the NSU Law online Master of Science in Health Law program. Her scholarship explores the regulation of developing areas of medical practice. Professor Uzdavines has spoken at numerous national academic conferences throughout the United States, including the Society of American Law Teacher’s Conference and the Health Law Professors Conference.
