Mako Sharks Gain International Protection

Mako Sharks Have Been Studied by NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute for Many Years

Mako sharks are among the fastest fish in the seas. For many years, researchers at NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute have been studying these apex predators in an effort to help provide information to those who can take action to protect them from overfishing. Recently the mako shark, which is also NSU’s mascot, received international protection via the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the treaty that governs international wildlife trade. Mako sharks had not previously been protected under CITES.
