NSU is among the inaugural class of higher education institutions to receive this award, highlighting its commitment to student success and outcomes.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has earned a Carnegie Classification as an Opportunity College and University, a first-time designation that recognizes institutions that foster student success by examining whether they enroll students who reflect their communities and whether graduates go on to earn competitive wages compared to peers in their area. Only 16 percent of U.S. colleges and universities received this designation.

NSU is among only one percent of U.S. institutions qualified to receive another new 2025 Carnegie Classification category designation as Professions-focused Undergraduate/Graduate-Doctorate Large institutions. Only 41 colleges and universities have been so named.

“Our mission is rooted in expanding access, driving innovation, and preparing our students for purposeful careers, particularly through the pursuit of professional and terminal degrees,” said NSU President and CEO Harry Moon, M.D. “This recognition is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to our students, and we are proud to be a national leader in both student access and student career success.”

The new Opportunity classification is based on data reported to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, data collected by the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard, and data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Institutions receive two measures: one for access based on the percentage of students who receive Pell Grants and one based on undergraduate students’ post-attendance earnings being above the national average eight years after entering an institution and contextualized to consider local demographic and economic factors.

This is the first year the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education have published the Student Access and Earnings Opportunity Classification. More information, including the methodology, can be found here.

NSU is one of three U.S. universities with both M.D. and D.O. colleges, and it’s the largest educator of physicians in Florida. With more than 70 medical, dental, and psychological clinics, NSU delivers services to populations across the region and prepares practitioners to serve communities in need and helps to fill workforce demands in healthcare, business, technology, and more.
