NSU Subject Matter Expert Has Extensive Experience Helping Reporters With Stories
FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – We’ve seen the national stories – the Coronavirus has made its way to American shores. Recent reports show that nine deaths have been attributed to the virus.

Bindu Mayi, M.Sc., Ph.D., is a Professor of Microbiology in NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. She teaches infectious diseases to students in the medical, public health, and other allied health fields. In addition to teaching, Dr. Mayi is committed to promoting infection prevention as well as antimicrobial stewardship. She has been a spokesperson on the Zika virus infection and has appeared on multiple panels attended by healthcare professionals and public officials, including representatives from the CDC. She has had multiple media interviews, including a live Facebook chat on NBC, the Sun- Sentinel, the Miami Herald and has been interviewed by ABC news for her knowledge about sepsis.
Prior to her NSU affiliation, Dr. Mayi worked in antibiotic resistance research as well as cancer nanotechnology research. She is passionate about medical education, especially prevention of infectious diseases and has taken her efforts at prevention to a global level by writing a book about the prevention of MRSA. In 2008, Mayi was one of 80 women winners of the ‘O-Whitehouse Leadership Project’, where her project was prevention of MRSA in U.S. hospitals.
