Nova Southeastern University’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography is known world-wide as a leader when it comes to coral reef research. Much of that work has centered around discovering what is adversely impacting coral reefs in the world’s oceans (bleaching, etc.) and how to combat such stressors and halt the damage being done. In recent years, the work has included the effect oil has on corals, as well as the dispersants (chemicals that are sprayed on a surface oil slick to break down the oil into smaller droplets ) used when responding to an oil spill, such as the Deep Water Horizon.
Recently corals have come under a new threat – dubbed Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, which since 2014 has been spreading like a wildfire across reefs in the Caribbean. NSU researchers have been working to learn as much as possible about this disease, and their work was featured in several media outlets – stories listed below:
